1985 - Anatomy of a Cover - Superman: The Secret Years #4

By Frank Miller

  1. Fascinating insight. I don't remember seeing this cover previously, & I have certainly never seen the original linework. I saw some of the Dark Knight Returns originals once, & I remember noting how cut & pasted they all seemed to be, clearly this was a technique which Frank Miller used on all his work.... I bet he was relieved when Photoshop became available. :-)

All that being said, his drawing of Superman here reminds me of the work of Ernie Colon, if you remember him. I seem to recall that Colon worked at DC as an art director or something around this time, which sets my mind to wondering if the paste up here is more than just Frank Miller's process, maybe Miller's rendition of Superman was deemed to be 'off model' & replaced by a different drawing, & maybe the Supes figure isn't by Miller at all?

  2. It is odd to see any character by Miller smiling! :)
